Club Event: 4th Annual “Last One Standing” 4x4 Challenge

December 15th, 2012
Trailmaster: LOS Committee
8:30 am Saturday, December 15, 2012 - Hollister Hills SVRA

Annual 4x4 Club event to raise money for keeping OHV trails open. See the Flyer
Last year the Santa Cruz 4 Wheel Drive Club's annual "Last One Standing" 4x4 challenge resulted in a generous $1100 donation to the Blue Ribbon Coalition Legal Action Fund, a national recreation advocacy group. The club is hoping to exceed that amount with its 4th annual event this year, scheduled for Saturday, December 15th at Hollister Hills SVRA.

Raffle Prizes:
There will be a raffle of prizes donated by vendors which we hope will raise the amount of the total donation to $1500 or more. Thanks to the generous sponsorships by past vendors, SC4WDC was able to sell approximately $900 in raffle tickets last year. Combined additional donations it totaled $1100.00 - and all of it was donated to the Blue Ribbon Coalition Legal Action Fund for preserving access to OHV recreation opportunities!

This  year’s generous donations are provided by:

  • Tepui Tents:   The ‘Ayer’ model  car-top tent (over $800 value) - http://www.tepuitents.com/
  • Power Tank:  Complete high performance CO2 air system - http://www.powertank.com/
  • Many other prizes still coming in! – Tow straps, tire repair kits, and lots of other great prizes!

Kid’s Xmas Toy Drive:
This year we will have a Toy Drive and Food Donation for the Santa Cruz Shelter.  Participants and guests are asked to bring a new un-wrapped toy for either girl or boy and/or food items for the donation.  http://www.scshelter.org/

What is “LOS” anyway?
The "LOS" is a fun family event that allows drivers of stock and modified 4x4 vehicles to earn points for driving style and skills in several challenging off-road courses.  The event is open to club members and guests up to a maximum of (25) contestants.

The Challenge:
This year we will have 2 competition classes: Sportsman and Unlimited.

  • Sportsman is defined as:  A stock or somewhat modified vehicle which still uses the standard body, stock or somewhat modified suspension, tires not exceeding 37” diameter.
  • Unlimited class is defined as:  A vehicle which may be based on a stock body or custom tube chassis, stock or highly modified suspension, and tires exceeding 37” diameter.
  • All vehicles will be reviewed and assigned to a class by the LOS Registration team member.
  • All participants must adhere to the LOS Rules and operate their vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Entry Fees:   $10/SC4WDC member, $20/Guests to cover the necessary insurance. (Does not include SVRA fee)

The Course:
The LOS event is organized into 5 separate scored events using the Hollister Hills SVRA man-made obstacle course. Each obstacle is judged for skill and style points and then all 5 runs are added together.  A winner in each class with the highest score will be awarded.

  • Stair steps and rock wash – a steep man-made section covered by cement and rocks to simulate a sheer granite wall, followed by traversing a narrow and rocky creek bed.
  • The Pipe playground – a section where large concrete pipes and rocks that the driver must navigate through and back again within the course boundary.
  • Blind driver’s challenge – the driver is blind-folded and is directed by the passenger through the tire & mud pit and after making a u-turn, must go back again to the start.
  • The frame twister – a section with un-even ledges, drops and several large logs.
  • The Tire Hill – a pile of large tires which the driver must cross over the top and down to the other side.

The Judging:
There will be 2 winners determined for each class this year, and will be awarded custom-made trophies created by SC4WDC organizers. One award in each class will go to the SC4WDC club member and the guest with the highest combined score for all events.
