Also known as the McKinney-Rubicon Springs Road, The Rubicon Trail is located in the California High Sierra due west of Lake Tahoe & appx 80 miles east of Sacramento. Rated 10 as being "most difficult" on a scale of 1-10 & known as the "Granddaddy of all off highway trails" it is appx. 12 miles of incredibly scenic albeit ROCKY un-maintained El Dorado and Placer county road.
The ceremonial "Trailhead" is at Georgetown, which is a tiny hamlet nestled on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California's Gold Country . West of Tahoe, East of Sacramento, North of Yosemite National Park and south of I-80 and Donner Pass.
CAMPGROUND NAME: |
Camping at Buck Island Lake for Friday - Day trip to Rubicon
Springs on Saturday. |
COST PER NIGHT: |
No charge at Spider/Buck Island, $10 at Rubicon Springs - must purchase
at least 1 fire permit for group. |
FACILITIES AVAILABLE FOR: |
Dry camping - must bring all food and water you need
Tent camping - No Motorhomes or campers Campers should carry own Porta-Potty and must "pack out" all waste. |
TYPE AND DIFFICULTY OF TERRAIN: |
Very difficult - Lockers and high-clearance mandatory. Do not bring
a rig that is not mechanically sound. Parts stores are a long way
away. Be prepared. Winch and/or Tow strap, and tow hooks a must. |
GOOD FOR VEHICHLE TYPE: |
4x4 vehicles with traction aiding devices (L/S, locker, spool,
etc...) and low range gears |
SPECIAL SUPPLIES NEEDED, IF ANY: |
Tow ropes, tools, and spare parts are a must have for this trip,
also Food, fluids, u-joints, fuel pumps, spirits, water, fishing equip (and License). |
TIME OF DEPARTURE: |
One group will leave at Thursday and one group will leave at on Friday. Any one wanting to leave on Thursday call Rick. For Friday, call Eli. |
